State Energy Price and Expenditure Data System, 1970-1989

Title: State energy price & expenditure data system [electronic resource] : SEPEDS

  • Distribution Media: 5 1/4" floppy diskettes
  • SuDoc Number: E3.42/4:

Abstract: The State Energy Price and Expenditure Data System (SEPEDS) is the database that supports the "State Energy Price and Expenditure Report 1989" (SEPER). The SEPEDS data files contain annual energy price and expenditure estimates for 1970-1989. The State data are grouped by Census Region. In addition to the States in the Region, there are data for the United States. Also included are two utility programs which will format the data for use by spreadsheet and database software products (see documentation Appendix G and H).

Two data files are included for each State: SEPRD.ZZ for SEPER price data and SEPRV.ZZ for SEPER expenditure data, where 'ZZ' represents the State code (see Appendix B). The records are written in sort code order, that is, the order in which the data are presented in the printed SEPER statistical tables.

Extent of Collection: The distribution media contained DOS ASCII text documentation, DOS ASCII CSV data files that can be read separately or imported into database software, a DOS BASIC data conversion program, and a DOS Lotus 123 macro data conversion script. The file named SEPERUTL.WK1 contains a macro which imports SEPER data files into a Lotus 123 worksheet. The macro, which executes automatically when the file is retrieved, converts the three records for each unique State and variable into a single row containing the data for all 20 years (1970-1989). The DOS BASIC program SEPERUTL.BAS converts the SEPER files from the decade format with two records per variable into a format with one record per variable containing all 20 years (1970-1989).

Process fuel and intermediate product consumption variables are in a unique DOS ASCII CSV file named PROFUEL.CON, which contains data for all States in the region plus the United States.

Data Conversion: Extraneous DOS ASCII characters were removed from the The documentation and data files. The "fixed" documentation file was saved with a .TXT file extension. The "fixed" data files were saved with .CSV file extensions. The DOS Lotus 123 data table cannot be converted because the worksheet contains a macro that will not translate to ASCII format or other spreadsheet software. For more information about data conversion, see File Processing and Quality Control.

Minimum Software Requirements: (1) Software capable of reading ASCII data files. (2) Statistical software capable of importing ASCII CSV data files.

  • ASCII text - text files can be read by most file viewers and word processing software.
  • ASCII data - text data files can be imported into most statistical and database software. Data values may or may not use separators. Common separators are commas (ASCII CSV), tabs or spaces.

Files: DOS ASCII files contain carriage return characters. ASCII files do not contain carriage return characters. For information about downloading these files, see Downloading Tips.
