File Processing and Quality Control

Title: Residential energy consumption survey [electronic resource]

Original diskette files: All diskettes were mounted on a 5 1/4" drive of a Windows 98 PC and the diskette files were copied to the PC hard drive. To preserve the original file content, all files were transferred to a UNIX server in binary format and retain their original time and date stamps.

Compressed files: All DOS compressed document and data files were extracted using the file extraction software (ARCE.COM) included on the original diskettes. ARCE.COM will only run on Windows OS versions that use the DOS (rather than NT) kernel. The decompressed files were transferred to a UNIX server in binary format and retain their original time and date stamps.

Processed documentation files: The DOS ASCII decompressed documentation files (user's guide and appendices) were concatenated with Unix "vi". This document was opened in Windows "V" file viewer software and printed to PDF format with Adobe Acrobat. Bookmarks were added to the PDF file. PDF output was checked to ensure that all original DOS documents and their formats were preserved in the PDF output.

Processed data files: The decompressed dBase III data files were translated to ASCII comma separated value (ASCII CSV) data file format with Windows DBMS/COPY. DBMS/COPY translation logs were checked for data translation error messages. No comparisons were made on the actual translated data cell values. The DBMS/COPY data dictionary follows:
