Title: International mortality data base [electronic resource]
- Distribution Media: 3 1/2" floppy diskettes
- SuDoc Number: HE 20.7039/2:M 84
Abstract: This data collection includes 265 DOS Lotus spreadsheets
containing mortality data for the United States and 40 other industrialized
countries. Data includes total, age-adjusted and age-specific mortality rates
for 19 causes of death for up to 37 years during the period 1955-1991. Also
included are deaths tabulated by age for those same years and a spreadsheet
containing estimated population, by age and sex, for each year for which deaths are
available for each of the 41 countries. All rate and death spreadsheets are provided
separately for both sexes combined, for males and for females. The source of these
data are drawn from tapes supplied by the World Health Organization. For the United
States, they were up-dated with data received from the U.S. National Vital Statistics
System.
Extent of Collection: The distribution media included 9 diskettes containing
DOS compressed files and a DOS decompression program. Machine-readable
documentation for this data collection was obtained from the National Center for
Health Statistics. The documentation contains instructions for extracting the
compressed files and a list of countries and corresponding Lotus file names.
Data Conversion: The DOS compressed files were decompressed with DOS PKUNZIP.EXE
according to the instructions in the documentation and the DOS Lotus 123 spreadsheets
are available in their original format. These spreadsheets were translated to PDF format (for viewing) and ASCII CSV format (for data analysis). For more information about data conversion,
see File Processing and Quality Control.
Minimum Software Requirements: (1) Software capable of reading portable document
files (PDF), such as Adobe Acrobat Reader. (2) Statistical
software capable of importing ASCII CSV data files.
- ASCII text - text files can be read by most file viewers and
word processing software.
- ASCII data - text data files can be imported into most
statistical and database software. Data values may or may not
use separators. Common separators are commas (ASCII CSV), tabs
or spaces.
Files: DOS ASCII files contain carriage return characters. ASCII files do
not contain carriage return characters. For information about downloading these
files, see Downloading Tips.
