This list of table cells and footnotes is derived from the table data descriptor section of the codebook for 1970 Summary Tape File 3. Table footnotes are enclosed in brackets "[ ]". Table cell values modified or calculated by the SSDC staff are noted below.

You can browse or search this list to find 1970 population and housing block counts to extract from the SSDC ASCII data file. When you find a count that you want to extract, note the table cell number (Txxxxxx) and choose the corresponding table cell number from the SSDC data extraction menu.

FOOTNOTES:
[1] - This aggregate along with the relevant count of units will permit the computation of a mean value (e.g., average number of rooms, average number of persons per unit, average rent, etc.).

[2] - Multiply the aggregate value by $250 to obtain the true value. The tabulated value was scaled by a factor of $250 for tally purposes.

[3] - Value is tabulated for owner occupied and vacant for sale only one family houses which are on a place of less than 10 acres and have no business or medical office on the property. Value is not tabulated for mobile homes, trailers, cooperatives or condominiums.

[4] - Contract rent is tabulated for all renter occupied and vacant for rent units except one family houses on a place of 10 acres or more. No cash rent one family houses must be on a place of less than 10 acres.

[5] - Units with "all plumbing facilities" have all of the following: hot piped water, flush toilet for this household only and a bathtub or shower for this household only.

[6] - The data in Table 017 in units at address should be used with caution. The counts of multi unit structures from this table are invariably lower than the counts from Table 013 on units in structure which is derived from a different item on the census questionnaire. Basically, the two tabulations have different universes, since a single building may have more than one street address and hence there may be more units per building than units per address. The Census Bureau advises users to place primary reliance on Table 013 for information on multi unit structures and to regard Table 017 on units at address as supplementary.

[7] - Complete kitchen facilities are all of the following: a range or cookstove, a sink with piped water and a mechanical refrigerator.

[8] - Direct Access is an entrance to a living quarters directly from outside the structure or through a common hall.

[9] - Lacking one or more of the following facilities: hot piped water, flush toilet for this househod only, or bathtub or shower for this household only.

[10] - This data item is provided to give the user a measure of reliability for the contract rent data at the block level.

[11] - If the proportion of allocated to non-allocated occupied and vacant year-round housing units in a block summary is high enough to affect the reliability of the data, the Census Bureau will suppress then entire summary, including Tables 010 and 037 which are ordinarily never suppressed plus Table 038 itself. In addition, if this situation occurs, Tables 005 and 011, which are ordinarily type two suppression, will be type one suppression with no universe counts provided. This suppression will not be applied to the tract summaries.

The Official Third Count Correction Notes issued by the Census Bureau contain total population and housing unit counts for those blocks which were entirely suppressed on the summary tapes because of Table 038.
