TITLE: Census of Population and Housing, 1980 [United States]: Summary Tape File 3F, School Districts

STUDY DESCRIPTION: Five 1980 STF 3 files (A,B,C,D,F) correspond to the 1970 Fifth Count files and contain 100-percent counts and unweighted sample counts of persons and housing units. All files in the STF 3 series are identical, containing 1131 data variables organized in the form of 150 "tables," as well as standard geographic identification variables. Population items tabulated for each person include demographic data and information on schooling, ethnicity, labor force status, and children, as well as details on occupation and income. Housing items include size and condition of the housing unit as well as information on value, age, water, sewage and heating, vehicles, and monthly owner costs. Each STF 3 dataset provides a unique level of geographic coverage. The School Districts file (STF3F) is a special tabulation of 1980 census data for school districts. STF 3F provides summaries, within states, for school districts by county (summary level 40), or where districts cross county boundaries, county component summary records (summary level 41).

• CODEBOOK: These data are documented by a printed codebook, CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING, 1980: SUMMARY TAPE FILE 3F TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION (Washington, D.C. 1983). The Geisel Library owns two copies of the printed codebook (C3.223:Stf3F/Technical Documentation).

• SSDC DATA DICTIONARY (PDF): The SSDC staff created a data dictionary from the Census Bureau codebook. This file includes STF3F geographic, population, and housing tables and their column locations. Users can search this file by keyword(s), note the associated VARIABLE NAME and subset variables by choosing the same variable names from the variable list on the SSDC STF3F data extraction page. Users should note that the printed codebook contains extensive footnotes that are not part of this data dictionary. These 59 footnotes are essential for understanding the STF3F table data definitions, calculations, and coding.

  Additional notes from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) are included in this file. The NCES notes document geographic level variables that are not documented in the printed codebook and include additional details about county components of school districts.

• OSIRIS/ASCII DATA DICTIONARY (ASCII): This text file was created by the SSDC staff and describes the STF3F ASCII data file. Each record in the dictionary has 80 characters followed by a line feed character. You can browse this file to find information about data file variables and their column locations. The dictionary can be read with standard statistical software, if desired. The OSIRIS/ASCII DATA DICTIONARY CODEBOOK provides the record layout of the dictionary.
