TITLE: Cross-National Time-Series Data Archive (CNTS), 1815-2003

STUDY DESCRIPTION: The Cross-National Time-Series Data Archive is a longitudinal data series. The Archive was launched in the fall of 1968 by Arthur S. Banks under the aegis of the Center for Comparative Political Research (subsequently the Center for Social Analysis) and includes national and international statistics from 1815 to 2003.

In establishing the archive, it was decided to assemble materials, insofar as possible, dating from 1815 (immediately after the Congress of Vienna and formation of the modern international system). It was also decided that all commonly recognized members of the international community should be represented, excluding a handful of quasi-states such as Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco, and Vatican City. In 1977, data for the latter were also introduced, with coverage extending from 1975. In January 1971, 102 of the archive's variables were presented in a volume entitled Cross-Polity Time-Series Data. CNTS on the web includes lists for the archive's variables and countries. Additional documentation is available as noted below.

DOCUMENTATION: The codebook file documents the variable names, labels, numerical scaling and include detailed descritions of each variable. The bibliographic file documents the sources and source codes for the variables. These documentation files are available from SSDC.

RESTRICTIONS: The CNTS statistics files are mounted on single public workstations or made available for check out by library users. These statistics files cannot be networked. UCSD users may access the CNTS statistics on the SSDC Data Services workstation, the SSHL SuperStation or borrow the CD-ROM from the Geisel Library. The file CNV.XLS is an Excel spreadsheet with country statistics and coded bibliographic sources included in the variable columns. The file NOBIBLIO.CSV is an ASCII CSV file without coded bibliographic sources.
