Compressed

  1. On the SSDC "files" menus, use the "Download/Compressed" link. This should force your browser to offer you the option of saving the compressed file to disk or choosing an application on your own computer to uncompress the data

  2. When prompted, enter a filename and path for saving the compressed file or choose and application for uncompressing the file.

Software for Uncompressing files

If you get a compressed file from SSDC, you will need software for uncompressing it. Here is a list of software that we know can uncompress these files.

Getting data in Excel format (or dBase, RATS, SAS, SPSS, etc.)

  1. From an SSDC "files" menu, click on the "Subset/Convert" button for the file you'd like to get.

  2. Fill out the Subset/Convert form specifying the varilables and records you'd like to get.

  3. In the "Output Options" portion of the form, choose the format you'd like from the pick list.

  4. Be sure to specify the maximum number of records to get. (Specify a small number if you would like to test the subsetting and formatting; specify "all" if you want to get every record that matches your needs.)

  5. Click the "get the data" button.

Important: You must specify one or more variables in the "Output Variables/Columns" portion of the form. Some studies have pick lists in this part of the form and others have a text box where you must type in column ranges. For those that have pick lists, simply click on the variables you'd like. For those that have text boxes, consult the codebook or other available documentation to determine the column locations of the variables you want and enter those locations one column location or range per variable in the text box.

For additional information and examples of using the Subset/Convert form for creating subsets can converting data into specific software formats, see the SSDC help page: Using the Subset/Convert Form
