Viewing Files

View files online
The SSDC "files" menus offer you several ways to view the contents of files.

The "View file" option sends the file to your browser for display.

Warning: Very large files may not display well on some browsers. SSDC Menus that provide access to files display the size of each file in kilobytes.

View files with your own software
Use the "Download to disk/program link" and your browser should offer you the option of opening the file with your own software on the computer where the browser is running.

Warning: Some files are quite large and not all software can will load very large files. SSDC Menus that provide access to files display the size of each file in kilobytes.

Downloading to view
The "View file" option can also be used for downloading straight to your disk. How this is done varies with browsers. Try using your right mouse button while pointing to the file (windows) or holding your mouse button down while pointing to the file (mac). This option might also be available through the browser's File menu.

Another way to view Data Files
Data Files are ususally quite large and not intended for easy reading by humans, but you may, nevertheless, want to view a few records of a file to help you understand the structure of the file.

One easy way to do this is to use the "Subset/Convert Dataset" button on the study's files menu.

In the "Ouput Variables/Columns" section of the Subset/Convert form, click the "output all variables" checkbox.

In the "Output Options" section of the Subset/Convert form, set the maximum number of records to output to 10 or 20 and leave the "format" set to "ASCII."

Then, click the "get the data" button and wait for a moment for the results. Click on the link to the results (which will be labeled "ASCII File" followed by the size of the file in Kilobytes). the 10 or 20 records will go directly to your browser window. Use your browser's horizontal scroll bar to scroll to the right and left to see long lines.
