TITLE:Vital Statistics Data, 1990-1998 (San Diego, CA)
STUDY DESCRIPTION: This collection of data tables includes parts of the San Diego, California regional data published in CHARTING THE COURSE II (Volumes 1 and 2) 1998: A San Diego County Health Needs Assessment Statistical Supplement. Data tables include demographic and vital statistics tables for Regions, HHSA Regions, Subregional Areas (SRA's) and Zip Codes. There are variables for population, races, ages, and vital statistics data for natality, infant mortality, all causes of death, homicide, suicide, cancer, heart diseases and infectious diseases. To help minimize the effect of small numbers of events and fairly small populations, some of the data were averaged over two years. These data were used to prepare the 1998 San Diego community health needs assessment and were received in raw format from the San Diego Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA). The HHSA source data were translated into PDF, Excel, and Dbase IV files. The Dbase files have regional and subregional names and codes and the data can be linked with GIS shape files to create GIS themes for all of the subregional areas.
GEOGRAPHICAL HIERARCHY: This data collection has five geographical areas. The geographical descriptions can be confusing. If you use subregions (SRA's) and zip codes for data analysis and GIS themes, you can't go wrong.
The County total is the sum of all Region data or all Subregional Area (SRA) data and Unknown data. Unknown data are births or deaths recorded without or an incorrect zip code. And in the case of deaths, without an age. Unknown data cannot be associated with records containing geographical units or age groups so these data appear in an Unknown record. If Unknown data are not available, the County total cannot be calculated accurately. County tables are available in the Region data section.
Regions are defined by the HHSA. There are six Regions; (1) Central, (2) North Central, (3) South, (4) North Coastal, (5) East and (6) North Inland. As noted above you can sum all Region data and calculate County totals if you include Unknown data. Region tables are available in the Region data section.
HHSA Regions are defined by the HHSA and replace Regions as of summer 1998. The potential for confusing HHSA Regions and Regions exists because both use the same names. Moreover, you cannot compare Regions with HHSA Regions or sum HHSA Regions to calculate County totals because:
- HHSA Regions exclude zip codes that are part of Regions and the County (zip codes excluded are primarily those for P.O. Boxes)
- The Subregion North San Diego was moved from the North Central Region to the North Inland HHSA Region
HHSA Region tables are available in the HHSA Region data section.
Subregional Areas are defined by SANDAG and unlike the County, Region and HHSA Region geographical units, are aggregations of census tracts rather than zip codes. HHSA used zip code approximations for defining the subregional areas in these data. Users should keep this in mind when they create GIS themes using the SANDAG SRA polygons.SRA's are parts of Regions and HHSA Regions. Unlike HHSA Regions, SRA's do not exclude zip codes. Therefore:
- You can sum SRA's to calculate County and Region totals (if Unknowns are included).
- The sum of the SRA's in an HHSA Region will exceed the HHSA Region total because HHSA Regions, as noted above, exclude some zip codes
There are 41 SRA's in San Diego County. SRA names and codes for Regions are:
- Central Region - Central San Diego(1), Southeast San Diego(5), Mid-City(6)
- North Central Region -Peninsula(2), Kearny Mesa(10), Coastal(11), University(12), Del Mar-Mira Mesa(13), North San Diego(14), Miramar(16), Elliot-Navajo(17)
- South Region - Coronado(3), National City(4), Sweetwater(20), Chula Vista(21), South Bay(22),
- North Coastal Region - San Dieguito(40), Carlsbad(41), Oceanside(42), Pendleton(43), Vista(52),
- East Region - Jamul(30), Spring Valley(31), Lemon Grove(32), La Mesa(33), El Cajon(34), Santee(35), Lakeside(36), Harbison-Crest(37), Alpine(38), Laguna-Pine Valley(61), Mountain Empire(62),
- North Inland Region - Poway(15), Ramona(39), Escondido(50), San Marcos(51), Valley Center(53), Pauma(53), Fallbrook(53), Palomar-Julian(60), Anza-Borrego(60),
SRA names and codes for HHSA Regions are:
- Central Region - Central San Diego(1), Southeast San Diego(5), Mid-City(6)
- North Central Region -Peninsula(2), Kearny Mesa(10), Coastal(11), University(12), Del Mar-Mira Mesa(13), Miramar(16), Elliot-Navajo(17)
- South Region - Coronado(3), National City(4), Sweetwater(20), Chula Vista(21), South Bay(22),
- North Coastal Region - San Dieguito(40), Carlsbad(41), Oceanside(42), Pendleton(43), Vista(52),
- East Region - Jamul(30), Spring Valley(31), Lemon Grove(32), La Mesa(33), El Cajon(34), Santee(35), Lakeside(36), Harbison-Crest(37), Alpine(38), Laguna-Pine Valley(61), Mountain Empire(62),
- North Inland Region - North San Diego(14), Poway(15), Ramona(39), Escondido(50), San Marcos(51), Valley Center(53), Pauma(53), Fallbrook(53), Palomar-Julian(60), Anza-Borrego(60),
SRA tables are available in the Region and HHSA Region data tables.
- Zip Codes - Zip codes are the building blocks of all five geographic units. Since zip codes change each year, you may not be able to compare data across years. Moreover, it is not possible to aggregate zip code data into regional geographical units because we lack the necessary documentation for each year. It is possible to aggregate zip code data into HHSA Regions. The HHSA Regional Zip Code Table provides a list of zip codes, area names and HHSA Region names. Note that area names are Census Bureau geographic units and are not the same as subregions. Zip code data is available in the Zip Code data section.
EXTENT OF COLLECTION: Documentation + data tables.
COLLECTION NOTES: These data were received in "raw" format from the HHSA. The data are available "as is" and may vary from the published data.
