TITLE: Census of Population and Housing, 1990 [California Reformatted Data]: Public Use Microdata Sample [1% and 5% PUMS]

STUDY DESCRIPTION: Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) files contain records representing 1-percent or 5-percent samples of the occupied and vacant housing units in the U.S. and the people in the occupied units. Group quarters people also are included. The file contains individual weights for each person and housing unit, which when applied to the individual records, expand the sample to the relevant total. Microdata are for those users who want to create do-it-yourself tabulations. Microdata files show the full range of responses made on individual questionnaires. For example, how one household or one household member answered questions on occupation, place of work, and so forth. The files contain records for a sample of all housing units, with information on the characteristics of each unit and the people in it. For more information about these data, see the PUMS codebooks.

REFORMATTED DATA FILES: The source of these data files is the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR 9951 and 9952). There are four data files, 2 each for the 1% and 5% PUMS data files. The 1% PUMS has a separate data file for PUMS that cross California state boundary lines. The 5% PUMS has a separate data file for group quarters. ICPSR hierarchical data files (a household unit record followed by a variable number of person records) were run with ICPSR SPSS syntax files to create SPSS data files with one record type, persons. Each record in the transformed SPSS files contains all of the associated household variables for each person. These SPSS files include all of the dictionary information from which they were created and are available to users as Windows SPSS files (.sav). The Windows SPSS files were output to ASCII fixed files. Users can use SSDC to subset variables from these ASCII data files and save the output to a format of their choice.
