STUDY DESCRIPTION: Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) files contain records representing 1-percent or 5-percent samples of the occupied and vacant housing units in the U.S. and the people in the occupied units. Group quarters people also are included. The file contains individual weights for each person and housing unit, which when applied to the individual records, expand the sample to the relevant total. Microdata are for those users who want to create do-it-yourself tabulations. Microdata files show the full range of responses made on individual questionnaires. For example, how one household or one household member answered questions on occupation, place of work, and so forth. The files contain records for a sample of all housing units, with information on the characteristics of each unit and the people in it. REFORMATTED DATA FILES: The source of these data files is the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) FastTrack service. ICPSR hierarchical data files (a household unit record followed by a variable number of person records) were run with ICPSR SPSS syntax files to create SPSS data files with one record type, persons. Each record in the transformed SPSS files contains all of the associated household variables for each person. These SPSS files include all of the dictionary information from which they were created and are available to users as Windows SPSS files (.sav). The Windows SPSS files were output to ASCII fixed files. Users can use SSDC to subset variables from these ASCII data files and save the output to a format of their choice.

EXTENT OF COLLECTION: 2 data files + codebook + geographic equilvalency files + SPSS files

• CODEBOOK: PUMS geographic, household and person variables, values and formats are documented in a machine-readable codebook file, PUBLIC USE MICRODATA SAMPLE 2000 CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING: TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION (Census Bureau Ed., 2003). Users of these reformatted California data should ignore the variable column locations in the codebook. Variable column locations in the reformatted files are available from the SPSS syntax or menu files listed below. The machine-readable codebook is available in Portable Document Format. The PDF format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using the Adobe Acrobat Reader. A copy of the current Acrobat Reader can be downloaded free from the Adobe Systems Incorporated Website at: http://www.adobe.com.

• GEOGRAPHIC EQUIVALENCY FILES: These ASCII text files are intended to help users understand the relationships between standard Census 2000 geographic concepts (counties, county subdivisions, places, and census tracts) and the PUMA geographic units of the PUMS data files.

• SPSS SYNTAX FILE: This ASCII text SPSS syntax file can be used with the ASCII fixed format data files. Users can edit this file to suite their specific requirements. Users are also advised to check the statements to make sure that they are compatible with their software installations, and if they are not, to make the appropriate changes.

• SSDC MENU FILE: This ASCII text file is used to create the drop down menus for subsetting the ASCII fixed data files and contains variable names and column locations.
